  • Mumtaz slams Zeenat Aman for endorsing live-in: ‘She should be the last person doling out relationship advice'

    Apr 15, 2024 07:12 PM IST

Mumtaz said Zeenat Aman shouldn't give advice counter to our moral values just to “sound like a cool aunty" and “increase her following.”

Mumtaz has responded to fellow veteran actor Zeenat Aman's controversial advice that people should try live-in relationships together before getting married. In an interview with Zoom, Mumtaz claimed that Zeenat should be the last person to dole out relationship advice, given her own rocky marriage. The two actors starred together in Dev Anand's 1971 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. What Mumtaz said

“Zeenat should be careful with what she is advising. She has all of a sudden come into this huge social media popularity, and I can understand her excitement about sounding like a cool aunty. But giving advice that is counter to our moral values is not the solution to increasing your following,” said Mumtaz.

“Aap Zeenat ko hi le lo misaal ke taur par (Take Zeenat for example)… She knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him. Her marriage was a living hell. She should be the last person doling out advice on relationships,” added Mumtaz.

Zeenat married Mazhar in 1985. He died in 1998. She has two sons from that marriage. On the popular chat show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal in 1999, Zeenat had said, “During the very first year of marriage I realised I had made a huge mistake, but I decided to live by it and make it work. I tried to make it work for another 12 years. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for me. There was not a single moment of happiness or joy during those 12 years. But I still tried making it work.”

    What Zeenat had said

In an Instagram post last week, Zeenat described a live-in relationship as the "ultimate test".

Zeenat Amanstepped away from the spotlight to marry actor Mazhar Khanin 1985. Despite realizing her mistake early in the marriage, she endured his infidelity for 12 years for the sake of their two sons.
In an old interview with Simi Garewal, Zeenat discussed the struggles of her marriage to Mazhar. She realized her mistake early on but chose to stick with it, despite facing difficulties, especially during her pregnancy. She also mentioned dealing with the public knowledge of Mazhar's affair, which was covered in a magazine at the time.
After the birth of her first son, Zeenat considered ending her marriage but chose to stay for her child's sake. She worked hard to make the relationship work. When her younger son was five, Mazhar fell seriously ill, and for the next five years, Zeenat fought for his health, enduring tough times.

The veteran actress shared the immense personal toll she experienced while caring for her husband, Mazhar, during his illness. She went to great lengths, from learning medical procedures to seeking overseas treatment. Despite her dedication, the ordeal nearly led to a nervous breakdown, leaving her physically and emotionally drained.

Zeenat reflected on the emotional strain of caring for her husband alone, saying that after years of giving everything, she was left with nothing. Despite her sacrifices, she never received the support or acknowledgment she needed, leaving her feeling empty and unrecognized throughout those challenging years.
The actress revealed that despite resolving her husband Mazhar’s health issue, his addiction to prescription drugs worsened, damaging his kidneys. Unable to witness his self-destructive behavior, she left the marriage. She expressed no guilt over her decision, confident that most women wouldn't have endured as much as she did.

Zeenat Aman made her Bollywood debut as Dev Anand’s sister in 1971’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna. After getting launched into the industry by a star like Anand, Aman was “keen to broaden my portfolio”. Hence, she went on to star in several films, some with Anand and some without him. Meanwhile, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia’s Bobby became a huge hit and Aman had this urge to work under the RK banner.

Aman shared the screen with Raj Kapoor in Vakil Babu and Gopichand Jasoos. But she only got a chance to be directed by him in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. She shared, “I was giddy to have been cast for Raj ji’s unconventional project, and put heart and soul into it. I was completely unaware that Dev saab was simultaneously misreading the situation.”

Though Dev Anand never said anything to Zeenat Aman, she was heartbroken to read about his opinion on her and Kapoor’s relationship in his autobiography. “Years later, in 2007, ‘Romancing with Life’, Dev Saab’s autobiography hit the stands. In it he professed that he was in love with me, and insinuated that Raj ji and I had more than a director-actor equation which broke his heart,” shared Aman.

Dev Anand had written in his autobiography, “After the premiere of Ishk Ishk Ishk at Metro cinema, Raj Kapoor kissed Zeenat in full view of the invited audience, congratulating her for her sparkling performance in the film. That must have made her evening all the more sparkling. Yet, I was jealous of him for making advances on what I considered my sole possession, my discovery, my leading lady, and desiring her with a kiss.”

When asked about the reason behind marrying Mazhar Khan, who was less successful as an actor while Zeenat was a star in the 80s, she said: “Difficult to say now. I think in our lives sometimes, you may be ready for certain things. You may be ready for certain changes.
