Zachary Alexander "Zak" Bagans (born on April 5, 1977, in Washington, D.C.) is the lead investigator and host of the series. Formerly working as a wedding DJ, he is also an executive producer and editor of the show. Bagans is the founder of the Ghost Adventures Crew (GAC), a worldwide community of paranormal investigators. Its membership consists of about 500 paranormal organizations. He currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So I set out on a quest to capture what I once saw onto video....With no big camera crews following us around, I am joined only by my fellow investigator Nick Groff and our equipment tech Aaron Goodwin. Being a former skeptic himself, Bagans says that his passion for investigating the paranormal resulted from a face-to-face encounter with the spirit of a suicidal woman who haunted his old apartment building in Trenton, Michigan. Afterward, his life-changing experience caused him to actively pursue capturing video evidence of the afterlife. In the introduction of each episode, Bagans states:

Using a self-described religious, scientific, and emotional approach, Bagans is known and criticized for his aggressive and confrontational methods used during investigations; however, he maintains that he respects the afterlife and only provokes evil entities in order to elicit responses. In a June 2009 interview with the Paranormal Underground magazine, he stated, "I don't want the public perceiving us as the taunting, provocative ghost hunters. We do that only to the bad spirits who we know are attacking the living." Bagans also mentions this concept in various interviews and episodes throughout the series.

2012 remains a busy year for Zak: he continues hosting and producing the “Ghost Adventures” Series (currently on Season 7); he launched his private clothes line called “DungeonWear” on Aug. 18; has been in two music collaborations, one within the new Lords of Acid album “Deep Chills” with a song called “Paranormal Energy” and the other with Praga Khan with the full length album entitled “NecroFusion”, released on October 23 – within the day, "NecroFusion" topped the Electronic Album Charts on iTunes; he is also the Executive Producer of a new show on the Travel Channel, “Paranormal Paparazzi”, which premiered on September 28.

Bagans was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He graduated from Glenbard West High School.

In 2004, Bagans teamed up with Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin to produce a documentary-style film called Ghost Adventures. The film aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in 2007. A successor series premiered in 2008 on the Travel Channel and has aired for 19 seasons as of 2019. Ghost hunting shows in general, and Ghost Adventures in particular, have been accused of fakery.

One of Bagans' more notable claims from the show is his alleged communication with deceased actor David Strickland of NBC's Suddenly Susan. Strickland committed suicide at the Oasis Motel in Las Vegas in 1999. Bagans claims to have recorded Strickland's voice nearly a decade following his death, and included this recording in a track on the album NecroFusion. No known scientific analysis has been attempted on the raw recording, including any comparison of the voice heard on the Electronic Voice Phenomena recording to that of the famous actor.

Museum

On April 2, 2016, Deadly Possessions premiered on the Travel Channel; the show featured Bagans finding items for a prospective "haunted museum" in Las Vegas, Nevada. The museum opened to the public in October 2017. It consists of 33 rooms with various artifacts on display. Visitors are given guided tours of the rooms.
