    When Doña Narcisa Rizal was born on 29 October 1852, in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines, her father, Francisco Engracio Rizal Mercado, was 34 and her mother, Teodora Alonso Realonda, was 24. She married Antonino Manapat Lopez on 6 June 1875, in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. She died on 24 June 1939, in Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines, at the age of 86, and was buried in Manila North Cemetery, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines.

    Rizal had nine (9) sisters namely, Saturnina, Narcisa, Olimpia, Lucia, Maria, Concepcion, Josefa, Trinidad, and Soledad.

    Saturnina was the eldest child of Francisco Mercado II and Teodora Alonso Realonda. She was married to Manuel Timoteo Hidalgo of Tanauan, Batangas. It was Doña Saturnina who published Pascual Poblete’s translation in Tagalog language of the Noli Me Tangere in 1909.

    Narcisa Rizal (1852-1939)

    Narcisa is the third child and was married to Antonio Lopez, a teacher and musician from Morong, Rizal. Like a doting sister, Narcisa was very close to Rizal and could recite all of Rizal’s poems from memory.

    Olympia Rizal (1855-1887)

    Olympia was married to Silvestre Ubaldo, who was a telegraph operator from Manila. Olympia unfortunately died in 1887 from childbirth.

    Lucia Rizal (1857-1919)

    Lucia was the fifth child and was married to Matriano Herbosa. One important fact to know is that Lucia’s daughter, Delfina, was the first wife of Gen. Salvador Natividad and Delfina helped Marcela Agoncillo to make the first Philippine flag in Hong Kong.

    Maria Rizal (1859-1945)

    Maria was the sixth child in the family. She married Daniel Faustino Cruz of Biñan, Laguna.

    Concepcion Rizal (1862-1865)

    Concepcion (nicknamed “Concha”) did not live long to see Rizal’s martyrdom. She died early at the age of three.

    Josefa Rizal (1865-1945)

    Josefa Rizal was nicknamed Panggoy in the family. Despite suffering from epilepsy, she joined and was an active member of the Katipunan. She died a spinster.

    Trinidad Rizal (1868-1951)

    Domingo Lam-co, the family's paternal ascendant was a full-blooded Chinese who came to the Philippines from Amoy, China in the closing years of the 17th century and married a Chinese half-breed by the name of Ines de la Rosa.

    Researchers revealed that the Mercado-Rizal family had also traces of Japanese, Spanish, Malay and Even Negrito blood aside from Chinese.

    FRANCISCO MERCADO (1818-1898)

    The father of José Rizal was the youngest of the 13 offspring's of Juan and Cirila Mercado. Born in Biñan, Laguna on May 11, 1818. He studied Latin and Philosophy at the San José College in Manila. After his parents death he moved to Calamba and became a tenant-farmer of the Dominican-owned hacienda. He was a hardy and independent man, a hardworking man of few words. He died in Manila on January 5, 1898 at the age of 80. Rizal called his father affectionately "a model of fathers".


    TEODORA ALONSO (1826-1911)

    Dr. Rizal's mother was born in Manila on November 8, 1826 as the second child of Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos. She went to school at the College of Santa Rosa. She was a remarkable woman, she possessed refined culture, literary talent, business ability and the fortitude of Spartan women. Rizal wrote about his loving mother "My mother is a woman of more than ordinary culture; she is a mathematician and has read many books."
