On her father's side, Jolie is of German and Slovak descent, and on her mother's side, she is of primarily French Canadian, Dutch, and German ancestry. Like her mother, Jolie has stated that she is part Iroquois, although her only known Native American ancestor was a Huron woman born in 1649.

Angelina Jolie portrays Greek-American opera singer Maria Callas in the new biopic Maria and has earned a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. After a limited run in theaters starting in November, the movie began streaming on Netflix December 11.

Maria debuted at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation, which made the Oscar-winning actor weep tears of joy. In an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 49-year-old Jolie shared that learning opera for the role was a “scary” experience.
