A REVIEW OF CONTEMPORARY MEDIA

Nicolas Saputra and Adinia Wirasti as Yusuf and Ambar, “generic” representatives of the lost generation that has come of age during Indonesia’s post-dictatorship Reformasi.

Tiga Hari’s views of the road fluctuate between the idiosyncratic local and an undifferentiated, postindustrial landscape that could be almost anywhere in the world.

Many of the standard tropes of youth on the road are deployed by Tiga Hari, only to be subsequently thrown into question as the film’s formal, stylistic, and narrative elements are put through a series of breaks and shifts, as if trying to shake off the film’s initially empty exuberance and examine the pervasive, underlying sense of stagnation that defines the characters’ life in the present.

The first narrative and stylistic break point of the film occurs during a drug-saturated party in the West Javanese city of Bandung, known for its independent music and fashion scenes.

Tiga Hari presents a transformed, but less hopeful take on Indonesia’s best and brightest in 2007. Yusuf attends a prestigious university in Indonesia, while early in the narrative Ambar discovers she’s been accepted to study abroad in England.

Once on the road, Tiga Hari begins to blend the generic with the idiosyncratic, often presenting its protagonists at odd moments – there are several shots of Yusuf urinating outdoors, usually after taking a wrong turn or otherwise becoming lost or distracted.

Vehicles of various kinds, including the narrative variety, break down throughout the film.

Actor Ringgo Agus Rahman has vowed not to miss watching his only son grow up and is willing to be selective in accepting jobs.

The 34-year-old said he will prioritize jobs that allow him time to meet and spend quality time with his son, Bjorka Dieter Morscheck, who was born in February last year.

“My son forgets me even when I video call him every day. Things get normal again only after three days. Before that, he cried when seeing me,” he was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

Being a parent is new for Ringgo, but he said that having his son gives him tremendous happiness.

Ringgo, who stars in the new movie Berangkat! (Let’s Go), which will hit theaters on Aug. 3, said he would have no problems missing out lucrative income if he had to spend an extended time away from his wife and son — especially as his son is still very young and doesn’t require him to spend too much money for entertainment.

“He can’t even ask me for anything. He’s happy playing with a plastic ball,” Ringgo said.

  • Jakarta. "Keluarga Cemara," an upcoming movie adaptation of the 1990s family television series by the same name, announced its future cast members on Thursday (04/01) at a press conference in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Some of the renowned stars that will be joining production include Adhisty Zara and Widuri Putri Sasono.

The "Keluarga Cemara" (Cemara’s Family) TV series, which was adapted from short stories written by Arswendo Atmowiloto, tells the story of a harmonious family of five living a modest life. The episodes convey virtuous messages of the importance of family over money or other material aspirations.

In the upcoming film adaptation by director Yandy Laurens, Ringgo Agus Rahman and Nirina Zubir will play Abah (the father character) and Emak (the mother character), respectively.

Zara and Widuri will play the daughters Euis and Cemara/Ara, respectively. In the series, both characters were portrayed as obedient daughters who helped their parents sell opak (rice chips).

The series also featured a third daughter, Agil, though the film producers have not yet revealed if she will be included in the upcoming production.

Zara is best known as a member of idol group JKT48. "Keluarga Cemara" will be her second movie role after "Dilan 1990," soon to be released this month. She was born in 2003, a year before the "Keluarga Cemara" series ended and is unfamiliar with the story. Now she is watching the series as part of her character study.

On the other hand, "Keluarga Cemara" will be Widuri's debut movie. Apart from being the daughter of actor Dwi Sasono and singer Widi Mulia, Widuri is known for her funny antics on her family's Instagram page, The Sasonos Family.

"Ara is a playful girl but there are sad moments [in the story], so I am learning to cry on camera," said the seven-year-old Widuri.

Yandy praised Zara and Widuri for their professionalism during pre-production.

When he starred in the 2006 comedy Jomblo, Ringgo Agus Rahman swiftly captured the hearts of movie-goers with his funny, heartwarming performance. His role as Bimo, a naive student caught between two loves, had him nominated for Best Lead Actor at the 2006 Indonesian Film Festival and also earned him the Best Newcomer Actor award at the Jakarta Film Festival the same year.

Ringgo has been in great demand as a big-screen actor since then. During the three years of his career, he has appeared in eight films including 3 Hari untuk Selamanya (3 Days Forever), Get Married, Oh My God!, Maaf Saya Menghamili Istri Anda (Sorry I Got Your Wife Pregnant) and Si Jago Merah (Fire).

He also had roles in a number of TV series, including Jomblo (literally, Having No Girlfriend), an adaptation of the movie version.

The Bimo character is such a familiar one that Bimo’s subsequent film offers were very similar. Like Bimo, the characters he played in his next movies provoked laughter through their foolishness. Ringgo has never sought to deny that his acting skills make him a natural for comedy.

“I used to wonder why I kept getting comedy roles. But later I came to enjoy it because it’s fun to do, not having to frown. Comedy is actually one way of conveying a serious message amusingly,” Ringgo says.

“My sinetron (TV drama), Ujang Pantry, for instance, depicts the life of an office boy who is frequently ignored by other employees.”

Ringgo won the 2006 Vidia Trophy for Best Lead Actor for his role in this sinetron.

Similarly, in the recent release Si Jago Merah by director Iqbal Rais, he played a firefighter, another profession often overlooked by society.

“I agreed to do the film as soon as I read the script. Fire fighting is something new to our movie-making history. Shooting it was really exciting. The cast and crew worked closely together. Before filming, we spent the night at the fire brigade’s headquarter
