Swedish Royal Portrait Jewels: How Art Brings History to Life
This week’s guest article is a fun one! My friend Erica Eriksdotter, a professional artist who specializes in portraits of animals, has shared some of her thoughts on the way that the worlds of art and royal jewelry intersect. Because Erica is originally from Sweden, she’s focused on the glittering jewels of the Bernadottes in both art and life. Enjoy!
It might seem like royal jewelry and painting pet portraits (like I do as a profession) live in two separate spaces, but consider this: before we relied on photos, a painter’s brush strokes were responsible for bringing tiaras and pearls to life on canvas to showcase wealth and status. It is thanks to these realistic portraits that we know so much about the provenance of some historical royal jewelry.
Just like my realistic memorial portraits of beloved animals, these heirloom paintings of queens and princesses were handed down through generations and now bridge the past and the future for the viewer (and the wearer). A prime example of how portraits bring history to life is when Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, in the documentary Kungliga Smycken, says, “The first time I walked by a painting and realized I wore the same jewelry as the person in the painting, well that was an awakening for me. That’s when it becomes real, the history becomes so real and alive.”
The importance of realism and presenting a painting that has soul cannot be understated when we discuss capturing glittering diamonds or the glimmer in a dog or cat’s eyes. It’s how our mind makes the connection between the jewels we saw in portraits and what we see today. Without that piece, we may not make the soulful connection.
As a fine arts painter born and raised in Sweden, Lauren asked me to share thoughts on my favorite Swedish royal jewelry. Like the paint layers that make a pet come alive on my canvas, it is the layers of meaning behind these part By theroyalposton • Our post awhile back on the art of royal signatures was such a hit that we thought we’d branch out and talk about royal monograms. There are just so many to choose from that we haven’t rounded up ALL of them but… Read More › The Bernadottes of Sweden have two significant tiaras made of round diamond “button” elements placed on rather simple tiara frames. One of the tiaras has six buttons, and the other has four. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Four Button Tiara. The buttons on the tiaras look extremely similar, especially from a distance, but each tiara features a different kind of floral button. The six button elements are rosettes, featuring ten small round diamonds hugging a larger floral cluster of seven additional diamonds. The four button elements are more complex (and, I think, more beautiful); they feature seven round diamonds encircling a central diamond in a sunburst design. The edges of the buttons include tiny diamond “leaves” between the “petals,” making the buttons look a little bit like Tudor roses. While the Swedish royals have an array of heirloom jewels with impressive provenances, these buttons are possibly some of the most significant ornaments in their collection. We know where the diamond rosettes from the Six Button Tiara originated: the Swedish royal court has confirmed that the buttons from the Six Button Tiara are the same “diamond rosettes” that were attached to the crown worn by King Carl XIV Johan, who was born Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, at his coronation in 1818. The Four Button Tiara’s ornaments, however, have a less clear provenance. One theory suggests that the buttons also first belonged to King Carl XIV Johan. He was a Maréchal d’Empire under Napoleo Crown Princess Victoria

In June 1944, when the allied invasion took place, Leopold III, Princess Lilian - whom he had married in 1941 - and the royal children were deported to Hirschstein, in Germany, and then to Strobl in Austria where American forces liberated them on May 7, 1945. Due to the political situation in Belgium King Leopold and his family left Austria in October of the same year to live in Switzerland in the villa "Le Reposoir" in Pregny. They remained there until July 1950. Prince Albert meanwhile continued his studies in a college in Geneva.
King Leopold III, accompanied by Prince Baudouin and Prince Albert, returned to Belgium on July 22, 1950. Upon his return to Belgium, King Leopold III decided to abdicate in favour of Prince Baudouin who took the oath on July 17, 1951 and became the fifth King of the Belgians.
On July 2, 1959 Prince Albert married Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria of an Italian family with royal connections. King Albert II and Queen Paola have three children: Prince Philippe (born on April 15, 1960), Princess Astrid (born on June 5, 1962) and Prince Laurent (born on October 19, 1963).
