Shane West was born Shannon Bruce Snaith in 1978 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of Leah (Launey), a lawyer, and Don Snaith, a drugstore owner. Shane began to pursue an acting career at the age of fifteen, gaining bit parts on various television shows, but it was not until 1999 when West appeared in ABC's Once and Again (1999) that he got his major breakthrough. Aside from catapulting to teen heart-throb status with the success of the show, West has made his mark on the screen within such films as Liberty Heights (1999) and Whatever It Takes (2000). He starred opposite Mandy Moore in the hit teen romance A Walk to Remember (2002), played Tom Sawyer in the action film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), and then depicted the short life of musician Darby Crash in the biopic What We Do Is Secret (2007). From 2010 to 2013, he starred as Michael on the show "Nikita" (2010)_, and since 2014, has played John Alden on the show "Salem" (2014)_.
Aside from acting, West continues the musical traditions of his family (his parents were both were musicians when he was young) with his band, Average Jo, for which he writes and plays guitar.
Shane's father was born in Jamaica, of mostly English and Sephardi Jewish descent. Shane's mother is from a Cajun (French) family from Louisiana.

Shannon Bruce Snaith (born June 10, 1978), better known as Shane West, is an American actor, singer and songwriter. He is known for his portrayal of Eli Sammler in the ABC family drama Once and Again, Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember, Dr. Ray Barnett in the NBC medical drama ER, Michael Bishop in The CW spy drama Nikita and in the WGN fantasy adventure historical drama Salem as John Alden. West received critical acclaim for his performance portraying Darby Crash in the biopic What We Do Is Secret.
As well as acting, West has performed with punk rock bands the Germs, Jonny Was, and the Twilight Creeps.
Early life
West was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of Leah Catherine (née Launey), a lawyer, and Don Snaith, a drugstore owner. Both his parents were musicians and had their own punk rock bands. His mother is of Cajun French descent. His father was born in Jamaica, of British and Portuguese-Jewish origin. He is the eldest of three children, with a sister Simone and a half-sister Marli Ann. His parents divorced in 1982 when he was four years old. Influenced by his parents, he grew up listening to the Clash, the Jam, Blondie, Elvis Costello, and the Kinks. Shane Black (born December 16, 1961) is an American filmmaker and actor who has written such films as Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. He is also known as the original creator of the Lethal Weapon franchise. As an actor, Black is best known for his role as Rick Hawkins in Predator (1987).
He made his directorial debut with the film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005. Black went on to write and direct Iron Man 3 (2013), The Nice Guys (2016), and The Predator (2018).
Early life and education
Black was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Paul and Patricia Ann Black. His father was in the printing business, and helped Black develop his interest in hardboiled fiction, including the works of Mickey Spillane and the Matt Helm series. He grew up in the suburbs of Lower Burrell and Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Fullerton, California, during his sophomore year of high school. In Fullerton, he attended Sunny Hills High School.
He attended UCLA, where he majored in film and theater and graduated in 1983. During his senior year, he decided to make a living in the film industry once his classmate, Fred Dekker, showed him a science fiction script he did for an assignment.
Black's older brother, Terry Black, who also wrote short stories, decided to move into screenplays starting with 1988's Dead Heat, in which Shane had a cameo.
