Steven Emerson (born June 6, 1954) is an American investigative journalist, author, and pundit on national security, terrorism, and Islamic extremism. He is the founder and director of The Investigative Project on Terrorism, and received a George Polk Award for the 1994 documentary Terrorists Among Us: Jihad in America.
Education and early career
Emerson received a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in 1976, and a Master of Arts in sociology in 1977. He went to Washington, D.C., in 1977 with the intention of putting off his law school studies for a year. He worked on staff as an investigator for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee until 1982, and as an executive assistant to Democratic Senator Frank Church of Idaho.
Journalist and commentator
Emerson was a freelance writer for The New Republic, for whom he wrote a series of articles in 1982 on the influence of Saudi Arabia on U.S. corporations, law firms, public-relations outfits, and educational institutions. In their pursuit of large contracts with Saudi Arabia, he argued, U.S. businesses became unofficial, unregistered lobbyists for Saudi interests. He expanded this material in 1985 in his first book, The American House of Saud: The Secret Petrodollar Connection.
U.S. News & World Report and CNN
From 1986 to 1989 he worked for U.S. News & World Report as a senior editor specializing in national security issues. In 1988, he published Secret Warriors: Inside the Covert Military Operations of the Reagan Era, a strongly critical review of Ronald Reagan-era efforts to strengthen U.S. covert capabilities. Reviewing the book, The New York Times wrote: "Among the grace notes of Mr. Emerson's fine book are many small, well-told st A “scrum” is a rugby play in which the two lines push back and forth to try to gain control of the ball. As a metaphor for a rough battle or mob scene in any other arena, it seems vivid — the first time. Maybe the second. Less so the 10th or 20th time we use it that way. A recent sampler: ••• “Market Warriors,” which is from the producers of PBS’s popular “Antiques Roadshow” and has its premiere Monday, is an amusing scrum in which four experts — Bob Richter, Kevin Bruneau, Miller Gaffney and John Bruno — compete to see who can make the biggest profit by buying items at a flea market and reselling them at auction. ••• Since Mr. Jackson disappeared from public view last month, Ms. Jackson has said little, telling a scrum of reporters not long ago, “I think it’s important to say that I love my husband very much, that’s the first thing.” ••• For a moment, an emergency room doctor stepped away from the scrum of people working on Rory Staunton, 12, and spoke to his parents. ••• On May 3, the day after an artful deal to end the diplomatic crisis over Chen Guangcheng, China’s now-famous dissident, unraveled spectacularly, Hillary Rodham Clinton followed a scrum of Chinese ministers around an exhibition of clean cookstoves. ••• Then there was Kuk Harrell, the only person not openly vying for Mr. Bieber’s attention, who moved through the scrum quietly, every so often checking settings on a computer. ••• If a solution took longer to find, which it frequently did, a pileup ensued and a scrum of customers would hover. ••• “They won as a team,” JoLinda Wade, Dwyane’s mother, said in the locker room scrum. • Miller Gaffney has a wide-ranging background in the art world, having worked with leading auction houses, commercial galleries, artists, museums, and information-providers for art collectors. She began her career with L'Antiquaire & The Connoisseur on New York's East 73rd Street where her responsibilities included assisting in the purchase of artworks and antiques on behalf of collector clients from international auction houses. In 2004, she joined Art + Auction magazine. She was later called by its parent company, LTB Holding, to work as a Business Development Officer. While in these positions, she also worked as a private consultant for clients in New York and Europe. Miller Gaffney is a graduate of the Sotheby's Institute of Art, a certified member of the Appraisers Association of America and International Society of Appraisers, auctioneer and member of the National Auctioneers Association, as well as a member of ArtTable. Miller starred on the popular PBS series Market Warriors and currently stars on Ovation's Art Breakers. She founded Miller Gaffney Art Advisory in 2006 and lectures and writes on all aspects of art.
