Appearance[]

Bruce Wayne usually wears a smart grey suit with a blue shirt. His alter ego Batman is designed to look like a bat, pointy ears and all. The inside of the cape and cowl is blue while his bat symbol and belt are yellow. The bat belt hold his grapple gun and other items of use. In his much older years he is much larger in size.

Personality[]

Bruce Wayne and Batman are very intelligent and sophisticated though in their own ways. As Bruce Wayne he is more laid back and acts more of a party boy around others making himself the center of attention. As Batman he is serious, quiet and takes things more slowly. He desires to keep everyone he loves and the people of Gotham safe no matter what, but equally believes that justice must be served without the need of killing criminals, however he has been tested multiple times. He prefers to work alone but with the arrival of Robin and Batgirl he has learnt to work as a team, though not permanently.

History[]

Bruce Wayne was born a child of wealth and privilege to Thomas and Martha Wayne of Gotham City. As the Waynes' only son, Bruce was the sole heir to the family fortune as well as his father's business Wayne Industries. When Bruce was a young boy, his parents were brutally gunned down by a mugger, leaving Bruce an orphan. The family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, picked Bruce up at the police station and soon became his legal guardian. Alfred raised Bruce in Wayne Manor as if he were his own son. Upon visiting his parents' graveside, Bruce made a solemn vow that he would devote himself to combating crime in Gotham City.

Who Created Batman?

Inspired by the popularity of DC Comic’s Superman in 1939, Kane saw an opportunity to replicate the success. He drew on inspiration from Zorro from the 1920’s Film The Mark of Zorro starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr, Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings, and a 1937 film called The Bat Whispers, conceiving a super hero character in the same league as Superman, whom he called The Bat-Man. Kane’s version of the Bat Man wore a red jumpsuit, a domino mask, and had two rigid bat wings attached to his back. Not quite the Batman look that we know today.

Kane recognizing he needed some help with his new character enlisted the help of Bill Finger whom he was already working with on a comic strip called Rusty and Pal. Finger first changed The Bat Man’s costume by making his suit darker and adding the cowl, a scalloped cape and gloves. He also made the eye slits on the mask empty rather than showing eyes. Finger

BATMAN'S ORIGIN

Young Bruce Wayne was a child of privilege, raised under the watchful eye of his parents, Thomas and Martha, in the upper echelons of Gotham City’s high society. Far removed from the city’s slow descent into corruption and chaos, Bruce enjoyed a carefree childhood with the promise of a bright and easy future, in which his family’s name and fortune would see to it that he would never want for anything.

But fate intervened before that future could ever become a reality. One night, after the Waynes exited a movie theater in one of Gotham’s rougher neighborhoods, they were caught in a mugging that left both Thomas and Martha shot dead before Bruce’s eyes. Suddenly orphaned, Bruce was left in the care of his family’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth, as he fought to survive in a world where the rules as he understood them no longer made sense.

The Batman character first appeared in Detective Comics in 1939, and was such a hit that Batman comics remained in print in one form or another into the 21st century. Batman is the “caped crusader,” the crimefighting alter-ego of millionaire Bruce Wayne. Wayne inherited a fortune as a boy after his parents were killed by robbers; when Wayne grew up he dedicated himself to fighting crime and chose the guise of a bat in order to strike fear into the hearts of criminals.

Unlike Superman and Spider-Man, Batman is a human with no supernatural powers. He lives in Gotham City and operates out of his secret crime laboratory, the Bat Cave. He battles exotic supervillains including the Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman and the Penguin, and is often aided by a sidekick, Robin the Boy Wonder.

Over the years Batman has appeared in many media and with various levels of seriousness. The 1960s live-action TV series was played for laughs, with a deadpan Adam West as Batman and nutty celebrity villains including Zsa Zsa Gabor as Minerva and Roddy McDowall as the Bookworm. (The series also featured Yvonne Craig as Batgirl.)

Two decades later Batman was reinvigorated by the 1986 publication of Frank Miller‘s gloomy, acerbic graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. Miller’s work inspired a darkly popular Batman feature film, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as the caped crusader and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. (Val Kilmer and George Clooney played Batman in sequels.)

Batman: The Animated Series began a long run on TV in 1992, with Kevin Conroy as Batman and well-known voices like Mark Hamill as the Joker and Adrienne Barbeau as Catwoman.
