Gagangad Fort and Gagangiri Ashram

1 km from Gaganbawada town lay ruins of Gagangad Fort. During british rule it was the headquarters of Gaganbawada tehasil, comprising around square miles now known as Sidhudurg District. There are a small mosque and Bhavani temple in the fort. The guarding walls of the fort can be seen at some places. During his early penance days Shri Gagangiri Maharaj settled in a cave known as Garbhagiri near the fort and perfected his tantrik techniques. Now there is a temple of Gurudatta and ashram of devotees of Shri Gagangiri Maharaj. During Datta jayanti, a large number of devotees visit the place and it is one of the main festivals of Gaganbawada town.

Karul Ghat & Bhuibawada Ghat

These two ghats are one of the most scenic routes which originate from Gaganbawada and connect the Deccan Plateau to coastal region, Konkan, of Maharshtra. Karul Ghat descends towards Vaibbhavwadi and is 19 km in length. The road condition is pretty good. This route further goes upto Talere and meets NH17 (Mumbai-Goa highway).     Accommodation rules for gagangirimaharaj Devotees

    1. While doing current booking, please fill up the right information of all members (Name, Relation, Age, etc.) and submit ID proofs (PAN Card / Aadhar card / driving license etc.) for all members. If the above information is not correct or true the room will have to be immediately vacated.

    2. Hall/Room will be allotted for minimum of 24 hours and maximum of 48 hours.

    3. Room will not be allotted for single person (Male or female). In such cases hall facility is available in  Accommodation.

    4. In case of couple, room will only be allotted, after verifying their marital status on valid documentation basis.

    5. Sanitation and other charges will be charged as per the time slot written on the receipt. The service charges of the room is fixed as per the time duration mentioned on the receipt. No changes will be charged thereafter on any grounds.

    6. Keep your valuable articles, cash, mobile etc. in your room, at your own risk.

    7. Devotees are requested to vacate the room at particular time as mentioned on the receipt and handover the keys to the floor attendant. Otherwise service charges for the next full day will be charged.

    8. If any kind of abuse or misrule is found in a room, room will have to be immediately vacated.

    9. For online booking, Rooms will be allotted up to three hours prior to the booking time, only on availability basis.

    10. In case of spot booking, based on room availability, they will be allotted on “first come first serve” basis.

    11. The decision of the Administrative Officer/Superintendent will be final in case of any issues related to the allocation.

    12. Please do not misuse the furniture in the room and do not scribble anything on the walls. In case of damages/loss, a fine will be charged from the occupants and the room will have to be vacated immediately.

    Indian Hindu saint and Guru

    Swami Gagangiri Maharaj was an Indian Hindusaint and Guru of the Nath Sampradaya. He is one of the most influential Hathayogis of modern India. Gagangiri Maharaj was particularly known for his water penance and intense meditation practices. He is considered the incarnation of Adi Dattatreya himself. Swamiji was a widely revered figure amongst Indian sadhus, yogis, and saints.

    Life

    Shri Gagangiri Maharaj was born as Shripad Patankar in a village named Mandure in Patan, Satara district of Maharashtra. Patankar family is an imperial family and are direct descendants of the Chalukya dynasty which once ruled much of South and Central India. At the tender age of seven, he left home and went to a Matha of Nath sampradaya which was located at Battees-Shirala. At a very early age he took Sannyasa.

    After getting initiated in a monastic order he started travelling with various Mahants, sages of Nath Sampradaya. Gagangiri maharaj was a child prodigy and mastered several shastras, yoga and various Tantras at a very young age. He travelled to far and wide places such as Nepal, Bhutan, Manas Sarovar, Gaurishankar, Gorakshdarbar, Gorakhpur, Pashupatinath and returned to Almora. Finally, he travelled through the Valley of Ganga, Himachal Pradesh and reached Badrika Ashram.

    Gagangiri Maharaj was extremely tired as a result of his peregrinations and he decided to rest in a cave. When he was relaxing, a sage wearing saffron robes came there from the mountains. He sprinkled water from his kamandalu, on the face of Gagangiri Maharaj. He also gave him some kind of green grass to eat which resembled coriander leaves. For his penance, he had prepared mattresses of grass. He found his mattresses growing like living vegetation. This was considered as an experience, where Tantrik technique is perfected.
