    One Tree Hill Star Weighs In on [Spoiler&#;s] Death &#; and the Emotional Return that Shocked Us All!

    Warning: If you&#;ve yet to watch Wednesday’s heartbreaking episode of One Tree Hill, avert your eyes now. We repeat, do not read on! Everyone else, proceed&#; with caution.

    After nine scandal-filled, scheme-riddled, redemption-seeking seasons, beloved One Tree Hill baddie Dan Scott on Wednesday night bid an emotional &#; and final &#; farewell to the shrub-deficient town.

    While his death wasn&#;t entirely unexpected, the rather exceptional hour of the long-running CW series pulled off a feat rarely seen in TV today: the unspoiled return of a fan fave character.

    Craig Sheffer &#; who portrayed Keith Scott until the noble character was murdered by Dan in Season 3 &#; reprised his role for the final moments of the series&#; pen-penultimate episode, helping usher his brother into the afterlife &#; and a heavenly one at that. What&#;s more, Keith even offered Dan his forgiveness for that fateful day nearly a decade ago (in Tree Hill time).

    TVLine spoke with Paul Johansson about the fitting death of his Tree Hill alter-ego, his final moments on set and what he thinks about Keith&#;s surprise return.

    TVLINE | I have to say, I didn&#;t think it was possible, but I do believe that, in death, Dan Scott finally redeemed himself. How do you feel about the way his journey wrapped up?
    The caveat for me to come back this final season was that the storyline would have some meat to it, that it wouldn&#;t just be Dan up to his deep dark ways, manipulating people &#; though that is always fun to watch. There would be some sort of need for the show to end in a way that would give Dan a really magnificent out. I couldn&#;t imagine what [creator] Mark [Schwahn] would do. I knew he had to kill Dan, but I didn&#;t know how he would do it. Would Dan&#;s heart finally give out? Or something more crazy? But the way that Mark wrote

    &#;One Tree Hill&#; fans were completely shocked 16 years ago when the beloved Uncle Keith, played by Craig Sheffer, was shot and killed by his brother, Dan (Paul Johansson), on the WB show. Sheffer, however, was the one completely blindsided, he revealed during a new interview on the &#;Drama Queens&#; podcast.

    &#;It was actually really, extremely disappointing because I had just made a movie and financed it myself for, like, a million dollars,&#; he shared with hosts Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz on the Monday, April 4, episode, noting that creator Mark Schwahn had a discussion with him after Season 2.

    &#;Because they had let me go for the last six shows the season before, I was like, &#;Are you going to cut me?&#; He came to dinner to tell me. He&#;s like, &#;No, no, no. As long as the show runs, you&#;re gonna be on it. You&#;re the character I based on my brother,'&#; Sheffer said.

    Ahead of Season 3, Sheffer&#;s co-stars were about to leave to start filming and he still hadn&#;t heard from Schwahn. He was golfing when he got the call.

    &#;He goes, &#;I&#;ve got some really exciting news for you. It&#;s gonna be the best season ever.&#; I was like, &#;Yeah, I was wondering when you were gonna [call]. I didn&#;t even get a call, so I didn&#;t know what was going on. I had my agent call yesterday and nobody returned his call,'&#; he explained. &#;He goes, &#;Yeah, so good news and bad news.&#; Tells me all about this great thing, [and says,] &#;And then Paul shoots you.&#; I go, &#;OK, so I&#;m dead? Does that mean I don&#;t get paid anymore?&#; He was like, &#;Yeah.&#; I was like, &#;Dude, you told me.&#; Not only was it cheesy, but the way it was handled. You don&#;t call me and talk to me about it?&#;

    Sheffer went on to say that his then year-old daughter was with him on set a lot for the first three

    One Tree Hill (TV series)

    American television drama series

    One Tree Hill is an American drama television series created by Mark Schwahn, which premiered on September 23, , on the WB. After the series' third season, the WB merged with UPN to form the CW, and from September 27, , the series was broadcast by the CW in the United States until the end of its run on April 4, The show is set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, and initially follows the lives of two half-brothers, played by Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, who compete for positions on their school's basketball team and the drama that ensues from the brothers' respective romantic relationships.

    Most of the filming took place in and around Wilmington, North Carolina. Many of the scenes were shot near the battleship USS North Carolina and on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus. The first four seasons of the show focus on the main characters' lives through their high school years. Within these seasons, we see the characters build unexpected relationships as they face the challenges of growing up in a small town. However, at the beginning of the fifth season, Schwahn advanced the timeline by four years to show their lives after college. This season featured a new storyline supported by flashbacks to their college years. Later, Schwahn made it jump a further fourteen months from the end of the sixth to the start of the seventh season. The opening credits were originally accompanied by the song "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw. The theme was removed from the opening in the fifth season; Schwahn said that this was to lower production costs, to add more time for the storyline, and because he felt that the song was more representative of the core characters' adolescent past than their present maturity. The opening then consisted only of the title against a black background. The theme was restored for season 8, in response
