General of the Armies of the United States, more commonly referred to as General of the Armies, is the highest military rank in the United States. The rank has been conferred three times: to John J. Pershing in , as a personal accolade for his command of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I; to George Washington in , as a posthumous honor during the United States Bicentennial celebrations; and posthumously to victorious Civil War commander Ulysses S. Grant in
The grade is sometimes described as a six-star general, as being senior to the five-star grade of General of the Army, but no six-star insignia was ever officially created and Pershing, the only person to be General of the Armies during his own lifetime, never wore more than four stars. Whether Pershing's grade should rank as four, five, or six stars has been a subject of debate ever since the five-star grades were created in To make Washington unambiguously the highest ranking Army officer in , Congress specified that his new grade of General of the Armies ranked above all other grades of the Army, past or present, while the law authorizing Grant's promotion made his rank in parity with Pershing's rank.
The General of the Armies enjoyed several privileges not afforded to other generals, including a much higher salary and the right to retire at full pay and allowances. Even in retirement, Pershing—the only-ever liv George Washington was born on February 22, , at his family's Pope's Creek Estate near present-day Colonial Beach in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Washington was commissioned a Major in the Virginia Militia in During the French and Indian War, he was taken as a Prisoner of War briefly, making him the first U.S. President to have been held as a POW. Washington resigned from active military service in Shortly after the start of the American Revolutionary War, the Second Continental Congress appointed Washington Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army with rank of Major General on June 15, He led the American forces to victory over the British, which allowed the United States to keep its independence. He resigned his commmission on December 23, , and was elected President of the Constitutional Convention in The electoral college elected George Washington the first President of the United States unanimously in and again in the election. He remains the only President in history to receive percent of electoral votes. On July 13, , President John Adams appointed Washington a Lieutenant General and Commander-in-Chief of all United States Armies. He held the position of senior officer of the United States Army until his death on December 14, On July 4, , George Washington was posthumously promoted to the rank of General of the Armies of the United States, making him forever the highest ranking person in U.S. Military History. He was buried at Mount Vernon, and his wife, First Lady Martha Washington () is buried there with him. Four United States Navy Ships have been named after George Washington: the sloop USS George Washington (); the captured German ocean liner USS George Washington (ID, ); the nuclear ballistic missile submarine USS George Washington (SSBN, ); and the nuclear aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN, Present).
