Shuka

Hindu sage

This article is about a Hindu sage. For the animation studio, see Shuka (studio).

Fictional character

Shuka (Sanskrit: शुकIAST: Śuka, also ShukadevaŚuka-deva) is a rishi (sage) in Hinduism. He is the son of the sage Vyasa and the main narrator of the scripture Bhagavata Purana. Most of the Bhagavata Purana consists of Shuka reciting the story to the king Parikshit in his final days. Shuka is depicted as a sannyasi, renouncing the world in pursuit of moksha (liberation), which most narratives assert that he achieved.

Legends

Birth

According to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, after one hundred years of austerity by Vyasa, Shuka was churned out of a stick of fire, born with ascetic power and with the Vedas dwelling inside him, just like his father. As per Skanda Purana, Vyasa had a wife, Vatikā (also known by the name Pinjalā), daughter of a sage named Jābāli. Their union produced a son, who repeated everything what he heard, thus receiving the name Shuka (lit. Parrot).

Other texts including the Devi Bhagavata Purana also narrate the birth of Shuka but with drastic differences. Vyasa was desiring an heir, when an apsara (celestial damsel) named Ghritachi flew in front of him in form of a beautiful parrot. He discharges his semen, which fell on some sticks and a son developed. This time, he was named Shuka because of the role of the celestial parrot.

A slightly different story is told in other scriptures. One day, the god Shiva prepares to narrate the secret of immortality to his consort-goddess Parvati, at her behest. He orders all other beings in the vicinity to leave. Shiva closes his eyes and instructs Parvati to make a humming sound to indicate her attention. At the very moment of Shiva's instruction, a parrot is born from its egg and becomes an audience to the secret divine conversation. Shiva starts his narrative and Parvat

Sukaphaa

Ahom king

Sukaphaa (r. 1228–1268), also Siu-Ka-Pha, the first Ahomking in medieval Assam, was the founder of the Ahom kingdom and the architect of Assam. A prince of the Su/Tsu (Tiger) clan of the Mao-Shan sub-tribe originally from present-day Mong Mao, Yunnan Province, China, the kingdom he established in 1228 existed for nearly six hundred years and in the process unified the various ethnic groups of the region that left a deep impact on the region. In reverence to his position in Assam's history the honorificChaolung is generally associated with his name (Chao: lord; Lung: great).

Since 1996, December 2 has been celebrated in Assam as the Sukaphaa Divas, or Asom Divas (Assam Day), to commemorate the advent of the first king of the Ahom kingdom in Assam after his journey over the Patkai Hills.

Legend

According to Ahom tradition, Sukaphaa was a descendant of the god Khunlung, who had come down from the heavens and had ruled Mong-Ri-Mong-Ram. Sukaphaa brings a divine diamond chum-Phra-rung-sheng-mung in a box, a divine tusked elephant, a divine chicken Kaichengmung, a divine embroidered cloth, a divine pair of drums, a divine sword Hengdan.

Prince of Mong Mao

The details of Sukaphaa's life and origins before his entry into Assam, available from different chronicles, both Ahom and non-Ahom, are full of contradictions. According to Phukan (1992) who has tried to hold up a consistent account, Sukaphaa was born to Chao Chang-Nyeu (alias Phu-Chang-Khang) and Nang-Mong Blak-Kham-Sen in the Tai state of Mong Mao (also called Mao-Lung, with the capital at Kieng Sen), close to present-day Ruili in Yunnan, China. Chao Chang Nyeu was a prince from Mong-Ri Mong-Ram, who had travelled to Mong Mao possibly on an expedition. Mong Mao was then ruled by Chao Tai Pung. Chao Chang Nyeu was later befriended by Pao Meo Pung, the son of the ruler, who gave

  • On Srimad Bhagavatam (9.21.25), Srila Prabhupada gives some interesting details about the life of Sukadeva Goswami.

Both Vyasadeva and Sukadeva are far from being ordinary persons. Vyasadeva is an incarnation of Krsna. In CC Adi. 2.97 Prabhupada mentions that Vyasadeva is a prābhava expansion of Krsna, which means he is Krsna Himself, but in a different form.

Vyasadeva comes to restore Vedic knowledge when it's almost lost at the end of Dvapara Yuga, while Sukadeva Goswami is considered to be an incarnation of the parrot of Srimati Radharani, who came especially to speak the Srimad Bhagavatam, illuminating thus the age of Kali. Being such an exalted soul, Sukadeva had a very profound understanding of spiritual relationships and was thus elected as the speaker of the Srimad Bhagavatam, even though both Vyasadeva and Narada Muni were present at the assembly.

The first interesting fact is that even a great personality like Vyasadeva didn't get a pure son like Sukadeva Goswami automatically. Both he and his wife practiced austerities for many years before Sukadeva Goswami came as their son. There are other similar cases, like Vasudeva and Devaki practicing austerities as Sutapā and Pṛśni with the goal of obtaining Krsna as their son. Although great personalities like Vasudeva and Vyasadeva are already perfect, still they give us the example of how the practice of authorized austerities as part of our spiritual practice are a way to get a spiritually inclined child.

The second fact was that Sukadeva Goswami played the role of a Brahmavadi while inside the womb, showing fear of the material energy and thus refusing to come out. In total, he stayed inside the womb for 12 years, coming out only when Krsna Himself reassured him that he would not be captured by Maya. Even then, he immediately ran away from home, taking shelter in the forest as a renunciant. With great difficulty, Vyasadeva was able to bring him back for a short period to listen to the Bhaga
