    PREFACE.

This book contains a life of Columbus, written with the hope of interesting all classes of readers.

His life has often been written, and it has sometimes been well written. The great book of our countryman, Washington Irving, is a noble model of diligent work given to a very difficult subject. And I think every person who has dealt with the life of Columbus since Irving’s time, has expressed his gratitude and respect for the author.

According to the custom of biographers, in that time and since, he includes in those volumes the whole history of the West India islands, for the period after Columbus discovered them till his death. He also thinks it his duty to include much of the history of Spain and of the Spanish court. I do not myself believe that it is wise to attempt, in a book of biography, so considerable a study of the history of the time. Whether it be wise

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who is credited with discovering America in 1492. He believed he could find a western sea route to Asia by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus led three ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, on a long voyage that resulted in him landing on an island in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. Though he thought he had reached Asia, Columbus had actually discovered a new continent. He returned to Spain and was treated as a hero, leading to funding for more voyages to explore the Americas, though he died still believing he had found a route to Asia.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS – THE LIFE OF THE ADMIRAL IN PORTUGAL, 2021 CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS - THE LIFE OF THE ADMIRAL IN PORTUGAL1 The History of Columbus – Part III Fernando Branco2 Abstract Christopher Columbus lived in Portugal, attended the Royal Court, maintained contacts with King John II, married a Portuguese noblewoman, sailed on Portuguese maritime explorations, lived and had a son in Porto Santo island, and despite all this, there is not a single reference to a Christopher Columbus (or Colon) in Portuguese documents prior to his departure for Castile (1485). All the information about this period of the Admiral's life comes from later documents. In this article, and based on these documents, the Admiral's various connections with Portugal are presented, showing his proximity to this country, even when he was already in Castile. Keywords : Christopher Columbus, Admiral, Portugal, privateer. 1. INTRODUCTION The life of the Admiral Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon), until he went to Castile in 1485, is essentially known for his biography3, written by his second son Ferdinand Columbus, but whose original was lost. Nevertheless, the existing version of this biography, which comes from an Italian translation, has little information about the early years of the Admiral's life. The son Ferdinand, born in 1488, was raised since he was young in the Court of the Catholic Monarchs and only contacted with his father from the age of 14, in his fourth voyage to the Indies (1502-04), and until the death of the Admiral in 1506, that is for about four years. Ferdinand Columbus even says in his father's biography that “... many things from his first years, I don't have enough information, because then I didn’t have the courage or practice to ask him…”. Ferdinand wrote a biography in which he tried to take into 1 Text from the communication presented in the 600 y
