Professor Sankawulo, died around 1pm today, Saturday, February 21, Throughout his life, Wilton loved Liberia and Liberian literature. Many of us who attended the University of Libera were students of Professor Sankawulo. I knew Wilton first, when I was a student at the University between , and later in the s as a colleague in the English Department at the University of Liberia. He was both a teacher, a father figure, a friend, a passionate writer, a politician, and a Liberian hero.

Professor Sankawulo departed this world today, leaving many memories with so many of us. For those of us who love Literature, he left us several books to read and remember him. Some of us remember his huge frame, walking in the English Department of the University or we recall him signing his book even in Liberia those days. I recall many debates with him as a colleague,debates over what I thought Liberia literature was compared to what he thought.

Wilton Gbakolo Sengbe Sankawulo Sr. (26 July &#; 21 February ) was a Liberian politician and author who served as the leader of Liberia from 1 September until 3 September , as chairman of the Council of State.

Biography

Sankawulo was born in in Haindi in Lower Bong County. He began his education in kpolopele Lutheran Mission, near Handi, and continued another Lutheran mission school graduating from the Lutheran Institute in He entered Cuttington College and Divinity School (now Cuttington University) in He began his literary career thereby publishing his short stories in the Cuttington Review, the college's literary magazine. Upon his graduation in , he was awarded a fellowship to study at Sacred Theology at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California. He earned his master's degree in divinity and subsequently attended a writers' workshop at the University of Iowa, which led him to earn a second master's degree in English.

Upon his return to Liberia in the late s, Sankawulo was employed at the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs (now Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism), where he served first in the Press Bureau and was later appointed Director of the Overseas Press Bureau. During this time, he maintained a teaching position at the University of Liberia, where he rose to the post of associate professor from until He also taught English and Literature at his alma mater, Cuttington.

Sankawulo began his fame as a writer in the early s. In , he published The Marriage of Wisdom, and Other Tales, a collection of Liberian stories. He subsequently published Why Nobody Knows When He Will Die. In , he wrote a novel, The Rain and the Night. Wilton Sengbe Sankawulo was born on July 26, in Haindi, Bong County to parents Dougba and Naisua Sankawulo. His early education was at the Lutheran Mission in Kpalopele, Bong County. He embraced Christianity and attended several Lutheran Mission schools including the Totota and Sanoyea Lutheran Schools and the Lutheran Training Institute in Salayea, Lofa County.

Later, he attended the Cuttington College Divinity School from to A fellowship award landed him at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California where he specialized in Sacred Theology, obtaining a Masters of Divinity degree. As one focused on higher education, he also studied at the University of Iowa where he earned a Masters of Fine Arts in English.

After studying abroad, he returned to Liberia and worked at the Department of Information and Culture Affairs (currently the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism). He later served as Special Assistant to the Minister, Dr. Edward B. Kessely and Director Specialist for Research at the Ministry.

With less than a year at the last position, Sankawulo was transferred to the Executive Mansion as the Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs. He later served as President Doe&#;s Special Assistant for Academic Affairs. Among other duties, he aided the President in obtaining his Bachelor&#;s degree from the University of Liberia in
